What happened
To address viewer ad fatigue in streaming television, the IAB Tech Lab has standardized six CTV ad placements outside the traditional linear-style commercial break: home-screen and menu placements, pause ads, contextual overlays, L-bar and double-box squeezebacks, and in-scene virtual placements. Standardizing these formats allows broadcasters and streaming platforms to shorten conventional pod breaks while unlocking high-attention, shoppable, and interactive CTV inventory that can be bought programmatically across platforms.
Key facts & figures
- ·Defines technical standards for 6 non-break CTV formats alongside traditional video ad pods.
- ·Covers Home Screen/Menu ads, Pause Ads, Contextual Overlays, L-Bar Squeezebacks, and In-Scene placements.
- ·Addresses viewer fatigue: research shows poorly timed breaks bother 71% of viewers and lower brand recall by 14%.
- ·Enables programmatic buyers to plan across all seven CTV moments without custom publisher-by-publisher creative builds.
Why it matters — our perspective
Until now, non-standard CTV formats like pause ads, L-bars, and shoppable overlays were mostly sold via direct IO because every broadcaster and streaming app used proprietary creative specs. Standardizing these placements through the IAB Tech Lab is a prerequisite for scaling programmatic Commerce CTV—allowing DSPs and SSPs to transact interactive overlays and pause formats via OpenRTB rather than manual custom integrations.
